Sweden Reports First Case of Clade 1 Mpox Outside Africa
In a significant development, Sweden has confirmed its first case of clade 1 mpox, a more severe variant of the virus previously limited to Africa. This announcement comes on the heels of the World Health Organization’s declaration of the mpox outbreak in Africa as a global health emergency. The Detection of Clade 1 Mpox in Sweden
The Public Health Agency of Sweden disclosed on August 15 the identification of clade 1 mpox in an individual under treatment in Stockholm. It is believed that this person contracted the virus during a recent visit to a region in Africa experiencing a severe outbreak. The detection of this more dangerous strain, which has plagued countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Burundi, and the Central African Republic, signals a new phase in the global spread of mpox.
Assessing the Risk and Response
Clade 1 mpox is infamous for its severe health repercussions, with case-fatality rates ranging from 3% to 10%. This stands in sharp contrast to clade 2, which exhibited much lower fatality rates during the outbreak from 2022 to 2023. Despite the severity of clade 1, the Public Health Agency of Sweden assures the general population that the risk remains minimal. While the new case does not prompt additional infection control measures at this stage, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Sweden has dealt with approximately 300 cases of clade 2 mpox associated with the previous global outbreak.
