Google testing Auto Dark Mode for iPhone.

Google is currently conducting tests on a new Auto Dark Mode feature for websites within its iPhone app. The feature, as the name suggests, automatically switches to a dark mode theme on eligible websites. This functionality is akin to a browser, allowing users to explore the web directly through the Google app, which also boasts artificial intelligence capabilities through Gemini, the company’s proprietary conversational AI chatbot. While this feature is currently in the testing phase and not widely available to all users, it presents a potential enhancement to the user experience.

Auto Dark Mode on iPhone is being introduced through Google Search Labs, a program designed to allow users to experiment with features that are not yet public. Google’s announcement about this feature states, “Stay in dark mode no matter what website you are on. Turn on dark mode on your device to activate this experience so all the websites you visit match your app’s dark theme.” Once activated, this feature will apply the dark mode theme to all eligible websites visited. Notably, Auto Dark Mode will not function on websites already equipped with a dark mode. Images shared by 9to5Google indicate that the background under Auto Dark Mode transforms into a dark grey hue rather than pure black. Since this feature is currently limited to beta testers, Google advises that the quality of the dark mode conversion may vary and does not apply to websites with existing dark themes.

In addition to the Auto Dark Mode feature on the Google app, the tech giant has also introduced a new feature named Minimised Custom Tabs on its Chrome browser for Android, available with Chrome version 124. This feature converts tabs into small floating windows when minimized, offering a convenient browsing experience. Users can access this feature through a downward button located on the top banner alongside the website name. By tapping the button, the tab transforms into a floating picture-in-picture (PiP) window, optimizing multitasking capabilities within the browser.
