Delhi Traffic Police Issued Over 1.5 Lakh Challans for Driving Without PUCC
Delhi Traffic Police issued more than 1.5 lakh challans till October 15 this year to vehicle owners driving without pollution under control certificates (PUCC), according to the latest data shared by the traffic police. This represents a significant increase of 50,662 challans compared to the same period last year.
Increase in Challans Issued for Driving Without PUCC
From January 1 to October 15, 2021, a total of 52,388 challans were issued for driving without PUCC. This number increased to 1,08,100 challans in the corresponding period of 2022.
Hotspots for Issuing Challans
The data further revealed that Daryaganj circle witnessed the maximum number of challans, with 6,306 issued in that area. Sarita Vihar (6,254), Rajouri Garden (5,595), Shahdara (5,442), and Tilak Nagar (5,252) were other locations where a significant number of challans were issued.
Types of Vehicles Accountable for Challans
Motorcycle riders were the highest offenders, with 69,190 challans issued to them. They were followed by scooter riders (49,219), car drivers (33,754), and autorickshaw drivers (1,556).
Comparison of Challans Issued Over the Years
The data highlights a substantial increase in the number of challans issued over the years. In 2019, a total of 81,246 challans were issued, which increased to 69,199 in 2020. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions on movement, the number decreased to 1,04,369 in 2021. The figure surged to 1,31,799 in 2022, showcasing a growing emphasis on curbing vehicular emissions and promoting cleaner air in the city.
Delhi Traffic Police’s Measures to Tackle Air Pollution
The Delhi Traffic Police is actively taking various measures to check and control air pollution in the city. They are rigorously enforcing the directions issued by the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court, National Green Tribunal, Commission for Air Quality Management, Central Pollution Control Board, Environment Department/Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Delhi government. These measures aim to maintain ambient air quality in the city.
Importance of Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC)
Valid PUCCs are mandatory for all vehicles in India, and drivers must carry a copy of it while plying on the roads. These certificates ensure that only vehicles complying with emission norms set by the central government are allowed to operate. Vehicles without valid PUCCs are subjected to a fine of Rs 10,000, including a three-month license disqualification for the first offense.
