Nirmala Kannan Singing in Thiruvananthapuram to Support Special Children Institute

The Tale of Hard Day’s Night and Nirmala Kannan

Ten years ago, a group of music enthusiasts from the era of rock and roll of the swinging sixties and seventies came together to relive their musical memories. Calling themselves Hard Day’s Night (HDN), they began organizing concerts in Thiruvananthapuram, featuring the chart-topping hits of their youth. This platform also served as a stage for various bands to showcase their musical talents.

Tommy Cherian, a founding member of HDN, fondly recalls how they commemorated the 50th anniversary of Woodstock with a concert that included performances by local bands. Their passion for timeless music led them to discover Rear Admiral (retired) Nirmala Kannan, whose captivating renditions of classic hits inspired them to organize a concert in her honor in Thiruvananthapuram. Interestingly, Nirmala’s husband, Vice Admiral (retired) Bhagavatheswaran Kannan, has roots in the same city.

On June 8, music lovers can experience a special charity concert titled “Hope and Harmony” at Trivandrum Club, starting with a soulful performance by Nirmala at 7 pm, followed by the talented musicians of HDN. The concert’s proceeds will be donated to the 50-year-old Rotary Institute For Children In Need of Special Needs in Thiruvananthapuram, which caters to over 100 students from challenging economic backgrounds. The institute’s dedicated team of Principal Beena AR, teachers, and caretakers have been diligently supporting these students in their educational journey.

The event kicks off at 6:30 pm with a heartwarming recital by the institute’s children, leading up to Nirmala’s musical showcase. As the night unfolds, the HDN musicians will take the stage from 8:30 pm onwards, followed by a delightful dinner for all attendees. Music aficionados can enjoy classic favorites and contribute to a noble cause by purchasing passes for the concert.
