KroaKING 2024: Movers, Shakers, and Melody Makers Compete

Reviving the Melodies of Bangalore: The Rise of KroaKING

Not too long ago, when Bangalore was still known by its former name, residents would gather for live music and karaoke nights, with Opus Kroaknights on Sundays being a popular choice. These musical evenings, once hosted by Carlton Braganza, have now found a new life with the inception of KroaKING.

Over the past five weeks, KroaKING, a singing contest, has seen an impressive 400 participants taking part. This weekend, 12 finalists will compete for an enticing cash prize.

Carlton Braganza, the brains behind KroaKING, shared, “The concept of KroaKING stemmed from the Kroak matches I used to organize at Opus on Sundays. What originally began as a small competition gradually expanded to 10 cities, culminating in a grand finale in Bangalore, until it was put on hold a few years back. However, with the opening of Bangalore Airport to events, the idea of KroaKING was reignited.”

A Diverse Lineup of Talent

The turnout at The Quad by BLR at Bengaluru’s Terminal 1 has been remarkable, with close to 400 registrations over the past two months. Following five rounds of qualifiers, the contest is now in the semifinals stage with 12 talented participants vying for the top spot.

The pool of finalists showcases a diverse range of backgrounds, including a photographer, a seventh standard student, software developers, and music educators. Notable personalities like Nikhil Chinappa, Vasundhra Das, Grace Maureen, Brian Carvalho, and Niharika Parthasarthy form the illustrious panel of judges.

Expressing his delight, Carlton mentioned, “It’s heartening to witness former Opus participants evolve into industry stalwarts and superstars. Grace Maureen, the winner of the previous season, now serves as a judge, while others have assumed mentorship roles.”

Legacy of Opus

Opus has nurtured a talented crop of singing alumni, including renowned names like Sanam Puri, Aditya Jassi, Thomson Andrews, and prominent Bengaluru figures Bryden Lewis, Behram Siganporia, and Mark Lazaro.

Aside from the competition, KroaKING will host workshops focusing on voice and performance in collaboration with The Harmony School of Music and BrandMusiq. Additionally, a commemorative CD created in partnership with Streamphony Studios will be launched during the event.

The grand finale of KroaKING is scheduled for September 28, starting at 7 pm at The Quad By BLR in Terminal 1. Entry is free for all music enthusiasts.
