Fawad Khan’s film ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ faces halt in India

The Legend of Maula Jatt: Indian Release Delayed Due to Legal Hurdles

The highly anticipated Pakistani blockbuster movie, “The Legend of Maula Jatt,” starring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, has faced a setback in its release in India’s Punjab state. The film, which was scheduled to release on Wednesday, has been put on hold following a stay order issued by an Indian ministry, according to Nadeem Mandviwalla, the distribution holder of the film.

Mandviwalla confirmed to PTI that the Indian ministry had obtained a court order preventing the release of the film in Punjab. Despite holding the exclusive distribution rights in Pakistan, Mandviwalla revealed that efforts were made in collaboration with Zee India, the international rights holder, to facilitate the film’s release in India.

Unfortunately, the release of “The Legend of Maula Jatt” has once again been stalled, with Mandviwalla expressing his helplessness until a decision is made by the court. As a prominent figure in the Pakistani film industry, Mandviwalla emphasized the significance of the film’s potential release in India as a vital step forward for Pakistani cinema.

He expressed confidence in the film’s quality, cast, and production efforts, predicting that “Maula Jatt” would be a major success in Indian Punjab once it overcomes the current legal obstacles. The resistance to the film’s release in India, particularly from certain political entities, has led to the authorities pursuing legal action, Mandiwalla noted.

On September 18, director Bilal Lashari had announced the film’s impending release in the Indian state of Punjab, thanks to a collaboration between Zee Studios and Zindagi, marking Fawad Khan’s return to the Indian audience following the success of the show “Barzakh.”

The ban on the exchange of films between India and Pakistan, initiated after the Pulwama incident in 2019, has significantly impacted both film industries. The last Pakistani film to be released in India was “Bol” in 2011, featuring Humaima Malick and Atif Aslam. The ban has dealt a blow to the Pakistani film industry, which heavily relied on Bollywood films for revenue before the sanctions were imposed.

Despite the challenges, “The Legend of Maula Jatt” enjoyed tremendous success upon its release two years ago, earning approximately Rs 400 crores in both domestic and international markets. This record-breaking achievement underlines the film’s potential for success if it secures a release in Indian Punjab.

Impact of Political Tensions on Cross-Border Cinema

The ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan have not only strained diplomatic relations but also had a profound impact on cultural exchange, particularly in the realm of cinema. The ban on the screening of films from both countries has not only limited artistic expression but has also deprived audiences of diverse cinematic experiences.

In the case of “The Legend of Maula Jatt,” the legal hurdles preventing its release in India highlight the complex interplay of politics and culture in the film industry. Despite the artistic merits of the movie and the potential for cross-border success, external factors have hindered its reach to a wider audience.

The Road Ahead for Pakistani Cinema

As Pakistani filmmakers navigate through these challenging times, the resilience and creativity of the industry are brought to the fore. With talents like Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan garnering international acclaim, there is a growing recognition of the prowess of Pakistani cinema on a global scale.
