Chennai Police files case against YouTuber Kantharaj after complaint by actor Rohini

Controversy Erupts Following Allegations Against Kantharaj

The Cyber Crime Wing of Greater Chennai City Police has recently found itself embroiled in a controversial case involving popular commentator Kantharaj. The allegations against Kantharaj stem from a contentious interview he conducted on a YouTube channel. During this interview, Kantharaj purportedly made disparaging remarks regarding several actresses in the Tamil film industry, insinuating that they had engaged in unethical practices to secure roles in movies.

Complaint Filed by Actor Rohini Triggers Police Action

The case against Kantharaj was initiated following a formal complaint lodged by actor Rohini with the City Police Commissioner A. Arun. Rohini, who also serves as the president of the gender sensitisation and internal complaints committee (ICC) of the South Indian Artists’ Association (SIAA), accused Kantharaj of using obscene language that demeaned women. She expressed concern that the interview tarnished the reputation of women working in the film industry and urged the police to take action against Kantharaj, including the removal of the contentious video from YouTube.

Legal Ramifications for Kantharaj

In response to Rohini’s complaint, the Cyber Crime Wing of the Greater Chennai City Police registered a case against Kantharaj under several sections of the law. These include Section 296 (Obscene Acts), 75(1)(iv) (Making Sexually Coloured Remarks), 79 (Word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and 352 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Additionally, Kantharaj was also charged under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, which pertains to the punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form.

It serves as a reminder of the ethical considerations that public figures, especially those in the media and entertainment industry, must uphold in their discourse and interactions with the public.

In conclusion, while the legal process surrounding Kantharaj’s case continues, it is essential for all individuals, regardless of their profession, to exercise caution and sensitivity in their public statements to avoid inadvertently causing harm or perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
