Progress in Defence Ties: Modi-Biden Welcome; UN’s Guterres on Ukraine War & More



PM Modi and President Biden have expressed their satisfaction with the progress in defense ties between India and the US. They welcomed the completion of the U.S. Congress notification process for a commercial agreement between General Electric Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. This agreement will allow for the manufacture of GE F-414 jet engines in India. They also praised the settlement of the last outstanding World Trade Organization dispute between the two countries.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has stated that the Ukraine conflict is unlikely to end soon and that efforts for global peace are facing challenges. He called for changes in global multilateral institutions. Guterres also commended India for prioritizing the development agenda at the G-20 summit.

India’s G-20 Sherpa, Amitabh Kant, has announced that the joint declaration for the G-20 summit is almost finalized. However, issues regarding the paragraph on Ukraine still need to be resolved. Kant emphasized that India has successfully brought all countries on board with its priorities.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has arrived in India for the G-20 summit, which will be his first major international diplomatic test. His visit comes amid tensions between China and Western leaders, particularly regarding China’s stance on the Ukraine crisis.

African Union Chairperson Azali Assoumani is confident that the AU will become a full member of the G-20 during the Delhi summit. He urged G-20 economies to invest in African industrialization and utilize African resources for manufacturing.

The Supreme Court has highlighted the importance of dynamic judges in criminal trials, stating that reticent or taciturn judges are not ideal. They emphasized the need for active and dynamic judges to ensure criminal justice is achieved.

Prime Minister Modi, during talks with Mauritian leader Pravind Jugnauth, reiterated India’s commitment to the Global South. He discussed cooperation in infrastructure, FinTech, and culture, and emphasized India’s role in furthering the voice of the Global South.

The G-20 dinner hosted by President Droupadi Murmu is expected to have low attendance from Opposition leaders, as several Chief Ministers are unable to attend due to various reasons, including poor health.

Trade unions in the power sector have accused the government of favoring private companies in the import of coal for power plants. They consider the recent directions and statements regarding coal imports contradictory and against the interest of energy consumers and the nation.

PM Modi and Prime Minister Hasina of Bangladesh held talks on diversifying bilateral cooperation on issues such as connectivity and commercial linkages. Modi praised the progress in India-Bangladesh relations and expressed hope for further collaboration.

UN Secretary General Guterres described India as a very important partner in the multilateral system but stated that it’s up to the members to decide on India’s UN Security Council membership. He also emphasized the need for immediate reforms to reflect the multipolar nature of the world.

In the recent Assembly bypolls, the BJP won three seats, while the INDIA bloc of Opposition parties won four seats, including the crucial Ghosi Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been granted four more weeks to complete the scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex and submit its report. The survey will determine the fate of the ongoing court case regarding the religious character of the site.
