Traditional Attire in Action
Weekends near Olcott Memorial Higher Secondary School are always bustling with activity. As I arrived on a Sunday morning, the streets were alive with anticipation. On one side, students in matching tees gathered, while on the other, women in a kaleidoscope of sarees eagerly awaited the start of their marathon.
Rashmi Chanjachanda, clad in a Coorg-style saree, shared her excitement, reminiscing about past competitions where she sported the same attire. The camaraderie among participants was palpable as groups mingled, swapping sari stories and capturing memories through photos.
The Sari Marathon Experience
Organized by The French Door, the women-only marathon aimed to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene. Participants, adorned in elegant sarees, embarked on a three-kilometer journey, either walking or running through the picturesque route.
A group of friends, including Poornima Jha, Niharika Vennala, Kamala Kalyanakrishnan, and Krithika Vikas, expressed their delight at the opportunity to don sarees for the event. Each embracing a unique style, they embodied the spirit of unity and celebration.
Neha Mahida and her friends added final touches to their attire, ensuring their sarees remained intact throughout the run. Their coordinated efforts and attention to detail underscored the dedication and enthusiasm prevalent among participants.
Adapting to the Challenge
Seasoned runners like Neha explored innovative ways to enhance comfort during the run, such as wearing shorter sarees or layering them over running tights. Sundarambal Sairamesh, a banker and long-distance enthusiast, emphasized the importance of choosing the right drape for varying distances, showcasing the versatility of sarees in athletic pursuits.
As the marathon commenced, a wave of vibrant sarees and enthusiastic women flooded the streets, exuding energy and determination. Participants transitioned from brisk walks to steady jogs, exemplifying strength and resilience in each stride.
Celebrating Achievement and Empowerment
Among the early finishers, Dr. Karpagambal Sairam, a gynecologist, highlighted the significance of challenging norms surrounding menstrual hygiene and women’s participation in sports. Drawing inspiration from icons like Usha Soman, who effortlessly runs in a saree, Dr. Sairam emphasized the importance of inclusivity and empowerment in fitness pursuits.
Overall, the Sari Marathon not only showcased the beauty of tradition but also celebrated the spirit of unity, empowerment, and breaking barriers. It was a testament to the enduring legacy of the saree and its seamless integration into the modern fitness landscape.
