The Surfing Revolution in Kovalam
More than a decade ago, Kovalam emerged as a surfing hotspot, offering some of the best waves on the East Coast. The beach’s popularity has grown, attracting both local and international surfers. The Surfing Federation of India (SFI) president, Arun Vasu, highlights the challenging yet rewarding conditions that draw surfers to Kovalam, Mamallapuram, and Pondicherry.
Today, the village is home to 12 independent surf schools, nurturing talents like S Moorthy, Dharani, and Sekar, who have become household names in the surfing community. With the rise of young stars like fifteen-year-old Kamali and sixteen-year-old Kishore Kumar, the future looks promising for Kovalam’s surfing scene.
A Glimpse into the Lives of Young Surfing Enthusiasts
Kamali, who started surfing at the age of three, has already made a name for herself, inspired by her uncle Santhosh Moorthy. On the other hand, Kishore Kumar, raised in the waters of Kovalam, credits his passion for surfing to Dharani anna. These young surfers are driven by their love for the sport and the thrill of riding the waves.
The siblings, Kamali and Harish, share a deep connection with the waters of Mamallapuram and Kovalam, where they find joy in long rides and challenging waves. Despite the rough conditions on the East Coast, surfers like Saanvi and Mahathi find the experience welcoming, especially for beginners.
