Witness the Splendor: Equine Beauty by Artist M Narayan

Depicting the Beauty of Equine Form: M Narayan’s Passion for Art

Artist M Narayan has found his niche in capturing the beauty and energy of horses in his artwork. While his focus is now on horses, he fondly recalls the satisfaction he derived from depicting everyday scenes of rural life. His sketchbooks were filled with vibrant images of vegetable vendors, bangle sellers, and the colorful attire of people in the marketplace. However, it was a simple sketch of a horse pulling a cart that ignited his lifelong passion for these magnificent creatures. Narayan’s fascination with their graceful necks, strong legs, and powerful outlines knows no bounds.

A Journey from Kolar to Pune

Originally from Kolar in Karnataka, Narayan made the pivotal decision to move to Pune after completing his Fine Arts degree at the Ken School of Art in Bengaluru. Despite having no connections in the art field, a good friend named PT Cherian played a crucial role in convincing him that Mumbai or Pune would offer better exposure and opportunities for growth. Narayan’s constant drawing practice took him to local stud farms, where he honed his skills by studying and reproducing the different aspects of the horse’s body and movement.

It was during one of his sketching sessions at a mall in Pune that business tycoon Jaydev Mody noticed Narayan’s mesmerizing horse images and immediately developed a deep appreciation for his work. This fortuitous encounter opened doors to the glamorous world of polo and horse racing, granting Narayan the best seats at racecourses in India and around the globe. Breeders and stud farm owners quickly recognized the talent behind Narayan’s artistry and eagerly sought to immortalize their prize horses through his exquisite paintings. His preferred location for sketching abroad is the Al Habtoor Polo Resort in Dubai, while in India, Mumbai and Pune provide ample inspiration and opportunities for his work.

Narayan’s Influences and Inspirations

In his artistic journey, Narayan considers the late legendary artist JMS Mani as his mentor, emphasizing the guru-shishya (teacher-student) relationship they shared. While the equine form occupies a special place in his art, he still cherishes painting rural vistas for the simple pleasure they bring. The current exhibition at the MKF Museum of Art showcases approximately 30 pieces of Narayan’s artwork spanning over four decades under the title “Strokes of Power.” Art enthusiasts can witness the timeless beauty and skill that defines Narayan’s work at this exhibition, which will run until September 17.
